By whom and where are these kinds of decisions made? Is
this a municipal, provincial or federal project and
program? It seems that this was a last-minute surprise
even for John Filion.
Not only do I have nothing against this plan, but like
John Filion, I believe in welcoming and supporting
refugees, a responsibility of all neighbourhoods and
citizens.
Maybe this is an opportunity for Willowdale to raise its
voice, for candidates to take the lead and for us to
support them. We need to create the awareness that
electing a councillor is not enough; to make them
accountable, we need to help them at all levels.
In a tweet I shared, Markus O'Brien Fehr also welcomed
this project. He said, "Friday morning, a report came
from City Hall recommending the Novotel Hotel at Yonge
and Park Home be converted to a new Welcome Centre for
refugee families." When even the City councillor and his
staff are not consulted or informed, we shouldn't be
surprised to be ignored.
Maybe this is when a joint letter such as an open letter
sent to three levels of governments and media will begin
a new path of being more socially engaged. |
